"We were sitting side by side, exhausted by a talkative shoulder rest," Elvira wrote in her diary about Maximos, her husband. The central heroine, under the apparent threat of a mental illness, redefines her freedom, trying to free herself from the shackles of fear. He loves but seeks to fall in love, protects but chooses to sacrifice.
Elvira has a famous marriage, an illicit love affair, an award-winning artistic career, and a deeply traumatic experience with her daughter. A young couple, Lucia and Dimitris, feel envy and love for her respectively, they confuse their paths with hers. At the same time, her daughter, Ella, develops an eclectic affinity with a distinguished mathematician, Razan, whom her mother had helped in the past, as a refugee child who arrived in Greece unaccompanied.
The heroes are revealed through a spiral of narrative thread, one back and forth in time. We teach them part by part, they raise the volume of their voice and illuminate their truth more in each chapter. And while their characters are progressively built, the central heroine follows the opposite course, she seems to be deconstructing in front of us. As much as she seeks to make her demand for freedom come true, we wonder, what is it really? what is it made of? Confirming Razan's words "Every time, in every division, an unnecessary multiple leaves you. In the end you stay, the first number. The indivisible, wonderful, hard core of yourself ".
